Have you been told you’re at risk of developing type 2 diabetes following a blood test or an appointment with doctor or nurse? Maybe you’re worried about getting diabetes because you have family with the condition or you know you have some of the other risk factors involved.

Whatever the reason for feeling worried there are things you can do, people to help you and steps you take to support your own health. It can be a very confusing time with a lot of information to digest so finding the right support for you is key.

If you are worried at all, especially if you have any of the symptoms of diabetes then you should book an appointment with your medical professional to discuss your concerns,

What Are The Risk Factors For Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes isn’t something that normally happens over night, it is a conditions that comes on slowly over time and there are certain factors that can put you more at risk and these include:

  • Being over 40 years old. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases with age and you are more at risk if you are white and over 40 or 25 if you are African-Caribbean, Black African or South Asian.
  • Having a parent or sibling with diabetes. If you have a parent, child, brother or sister with diabetes then you are between 2 and 6 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
  • Being South Asian, African-Caribbean or Black African. People of these ethnicities are 2 to 4 times more likely to get type 2 diabetes.
  • High blood pressure. People with a high blood pressure are known to be more at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Carrying extra weight. If you are carrying extra weight, especially around your middle then you are at a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

If you do have any of the risk factors listed above, this does mean you are more at risk but does not mean you will definitely get type 2 diabetes and there are things you can do to help yourself by introducing healthier habits and losing weight if necessary.
